Park Interpreter Margi Jenks discusses Crater geology with earth science students during Earth Science Day 2009.

Greetings from the Crater!  Last week, the park hosted its annual Earth Science Day and invited area schools to attend.  Wednesday morning, nearly 100 students from Delight and Caddo Hills arrived to enjoy seven speakers and abundant information about our awesome planet!

The Air Force's modular weather equipment is a popular stop for students during Earth Science Day 2009.

Guest speakers represented local, state, and national businesses and agencies, including Jeanine’s Fine Jewelry of Nashville, the Arkansas Geological Commission, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the National Weather Service, and the United States Air Force.  Presenters covered topics including gemology, geology, soil types, erosion, and Arkansas weather.  They used interesting, hands-on props and offered relevant information that excited the kids and made them think about their world in new ways.

Earth science students enjoy an exhibit of Crater rocks and minerals that have been set in jewelry.

In addition, this year’s Earth Science Day was held during the American Geological Institute’s Earth Science Week, meaning students at the park were part of a national celebration of earth sciences and their impact in our lives.  As always, the Crater provided a perfect backdrop for learning more about the world around us!

Retired Natural Resources Conservationist Russell Fleharty points out the unique soil of Crater of Diamonds to earth science students.

Fall is full of exciting activities at Crater of Diamonds State Park for students and travelers, alike.  In fitting with the season, come see our next Awesome Autumn speaker on Saturday, October 24, at 7:30 p.m.  Rachel Miller, Education Outreach Coordinator of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, will recount ghostly tales of real places in Arkansas in the Diamond Discovery Center!  Then on October 31, Jeanine King, of Jeanine’s Fine Jewelers in Nashville, will be at the park at 3 p.m. to talk about beautiful jewelry made from many of the Crater’s finest diamonds and other gems and minerals!
