November 2009 diamond finds at the Crater

By Waymon Cox

Greetings from Crater of Diamonds State Park!  Last month, a total of 47 diamonds were registered at our Diamond Discovery Center, weighing a total of 10.79 carats.  Visitors from seven states certified 38 white, five brown, and four yellow diamonds.

Beautiful fall weather prevailed through most of November, and the park only saw seven days of mostly-light rain.  This, along with increased visitation around Thanksgiving, led to busier days and 15 more diamonds registered than in October.  Three of these gems weighed more than one carat each, and one was named this year’s second-largest find, a 3.20-carat white diamond registered by “regular” diamond miner Billy Moore on November 11.

Unfortunately, the declining trend of diamond finds continued in November, with 18 fewer finds registered than one year ago.  At the end of the month, we were actually tied with January-November 2008 finds, with 875 diamonds so far this year.  Whether we will bounce back and exceed the total number of 2008 diamond finds remains to be seen, with a few more days and lots of holiday travelers to come in December!
