Area students enjoy Earth Science Days at Crater of Diamonds

by Waymon Cox

Greetings from the Crater!  Last Tuesday and Wednesday, students from two local junior high schools attended the 2010 Earth Science Days event at Crater of Diamonds State Park.  This year, we split the event into two days to accommodate smaller groups, for more individualized focus on the students.
Along with two of our park interpreters, volunteers from the Arkansas Geological Survey, Arkansas Forestry Commission, Arkansas Natural Resources Commission, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration presented a variety of exciting programs for visiting earth science students.  Following are a few photos taken during both days of the event:

Angela Chambers and Lea Nondorf show Delight students how the AGS maps rocks and minerals in Arkansas.

Geologist Supervisor Bill Prior discusses Arkansas oil with students from Delight.

Park Interpreter Russell Fleharty talks to students about soil and shows soil layers in the diamond search area.

Delight students conduct an experiment with the Arkansas Forestry Commission to show how trees and ground cover slow erosion.

ANRC Geologist Jim Battreal talks to Mineral Springs students about the state's water usage.

NOAA Meteorologist Emilie Nipper presents a program on Arkansas weather for Mineral Springs students.

Park Interpreter Margi Jenks shows Mineral Springs students how to search for diamonds.
