See the Strawn-Wagner Diamond at Crater of Diamonds State Park
By Waymon Cox
Crater of Diamonds State Park is pleased to announce that the Strawn-Wagner Diamond is once again on public display in the park visitor center!
The only perfect diamond ever certified by the American Gem Society, the Strawn-Wagner was found in 1990 by Shirley Strawn, of Murfreesboro. In 1997, she had the three-carat icy white crystal cut by Lazare Kaplan International Inc., of New York into a 1.09-carat round brilliant gem. Underwood’s Fine Jewelers, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, custom-created a platinum ring for the diamond, with 24-karat gold inlay and gold apple blossoms on either side of the crown, representing Arkansas’s state flower.
The Strawn-Wagner Diamond was certified by the AGS in 1998 with the perfect grade of 0/0/0, meaning it had an ideal cut, “D” color, and no flaws.
The state later purchased it with contributions from Arkansas individuals, organizations, and companies and placed it on display at Crater of Diamonds State Park, for visitors to witness its perfect beauty and learn about its fascinating history.
In 2009, the Strawn-Wagner Diamond was temporarily removed from display during renovations to the visitor center. Photographs, post cards, and brochures depicting the diamond remained available to the public throughout that time.
The Strawn-Wagner Diamond was recently returned to public display following the reopening of the visitor center in January. A new high definition monitor and camera offer a 360-degree, crystal-clear view of this one-in-a-billion gem’s facets and shine!
The public is invited to visit Crater of Diamonds State Park to see this perfect piece of Arkansas history up close! The park’s Adventure Theater and brand new visitor center museum will also open to the public in the near future.
Crater of Diamonds State Park is the world’s only diamond-producing site open for public searching. The park remains open year-round, seven days a week, closing only on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Park interpreters regularly demonstrate diamond mining techniques and offer other special interest programs for visitors and groups.
