A special day for Girl Scouts at the Crater of Diamonds
By Margi Jenks
Now that we have all had our fill of Girl Scout thin mints, The Crater of Diamonds State Park has a suggestion for troops to spend some of those hard earned cookie dollars! On Saturday, April 14th we will host our first Girl Scout Crater Day. The program begins at 10:00 AM and runs until 3:00 PM. The Girl Scouts who are presently Junior Scouts are invited to attend, along with their leaders and parents. The program is limited to 40 people and the cost is $8.00 for each participant. Juniors that want to attend can sign up as singles or as troops. The event price includes the regular diamond mine admission and a Crater of Diamonds event patch.
We are planning lots of fun with games to play, and, of course, diamonds to hunt for. The girls will learn how to find diamonds and the history of diamond mining at the Crater. We will also have a program on the famous diamonds that have been found at the Crater over the years. Finally, the troop members will learn how to read different kinds of maps and be introduced to using a Global Positioning System (GPS). Participants will need to bring a picnic lunch and snacks, and if they have one, a handheld GPS.
Interested parents or troop leaders can register by calling 850/285-3113 and asking for Margi Jenks or Waymon Cox. Registrations are due by April 7th.
So, come enjoy a day of learning and fun at the Crater of Diamonds State Park!
