33 February diamonds found at the Crater
by Waymon Cox
Greetings from Crater of Diamonds State Park! During February, visitors from seven states and one Canadian province registered 17 white, eight brown, and eight yellow diamonds at the Crater. In addition to Arkansans, visitors from Alabama, Colorado, Louisiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Ontario discovered diamonds during the month.
On February 26, a visitor from Siloam Springs, Arkansas registered the largest diamond of the month and one of the largest found so far this year, a 1.80 ct. white gem. It was one of five diamonds found on the surface of the diamond search area during February. By the end of the month, 70 diamonds had been registered at the Crater in 2012, 15 more than last year!
Warm temperatures have boosted visitation and diamond finds so far this year, and we are looking forward to more beautiful weather and an exciting Spring Break in March! We hope you’ll join us as we celebrate Crater of Diamonds State Park’s 40th anniversary, beginning on March 15, with a week of special programs focusing on the Crater’s history, geology, and famous diamond finds. Visit our web site at www.CraterofDiamondsStatePark.com to see a schedule of these and other programs and events in 2012. In the coming weeks, someone will also register the 30,000th diamond found at Crater of Diamonds State Park since 1972, making 2012 a year of “milestones” and one of the most exciting times to visit the park!
Note: Bobbie Lou Hendrix, of Antoine,AR, who was a longtime supporter and friend of the Crater of Diamonds State Park, passed away on Thursday, March1, 2012. She was 79 years old. At the time of her death, she was working with park staff on beginning the process of publishing a new edition of the book. She was also instrumental in bringing the Strawn-Wagner perfect diamond to permanent display in the park’s visitors center. She will be missed.
