Summer Fun Fridays for Kids at the Diamond Mine
By Margi Jenks
Are you looking for something fun and educational for your child this summer? On three Fridays in July the Crater of Diamonds State Park will be holding its second year of day camps for children who will be entering the 4th-6th grades in the fall. Each Friday will have a different theme with games, crafts and lots of learning opportunities based on that theme. The camp runs from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The $30.00 cost includes lunch, snacks, and admissions for the child to the Diamond Springs Water Park and the diamond search area.

The Friday, July 13th theme is Be A Diamond Miner. The children will hunt for diamonds with the park interpreters, collect and learn about the other beautiful rocks and minerals found at the diamond mine, and be introduced to the basics in turning rocks into jewelry. Your child will Be A Map Explorer on Friday, July 20th. They will learn some basic survival skills and how to find their way around using a map and GPS. The last Friday, July 27th, each camper will Be A Nature Photographer. They will be introduced to the basics of taking good photographs and use their skills to photograph and learn about the plants and animals that live at the state park.
Participants are limited to 15 campers at each session. You can register for each day separately. Any campers registered for all three sessions will receive a $15.00 discount. The camp registration forms and a $15.00 non-refundable deposit must be postmarked by Friday, July 6th. Call or email Margi or Waymon for details and the answers to any questions. Both Margi and Waymon can be reached at 870/285-3113. Margi’s email is margaret.jenks@arkansas.gov and Waymon’s is waymon.cox@arkansas.gov. If you are planning a long weekend at the Crater, start your visit on Friday for a full day of fun for your child!
