First quarter 2013 Crater Carats Report

by Waymon Cox

Greetings from Crater of Diamonds State Park! It’s hard to believe that we’re already a quarter of the way through 2013, and summer is just a couple months away. Over the past three months, we’ve seen thousands of visitors come in search of their very own diamonds. As of March 31, 138 diamonds had been registered at the Crater in 2013.

Visitors from Arkansas registered 98 diamonds during the first quarter, while visitors from Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, and 11 other states registered 39 diamonds. A family from Belize also registered one diamond in February.

Five first-quarter diamonds weighed more than one carat each, and the largest was a 1.61 ct. brown gem found in late March on the surface of the search area. 68 white diamonds were registered during the first quarter, and there were 35 each in hues of brown and yellow. Visitors registered more than 31 carats of diamonds from January through March, including 19.60 carats found in January alone!

With a great start to the year and the first two-carat diamond of 2013 registered just three weeks ago, we are excited to see how diamonds found over the next few months will compare to what we’ve seen so far!
