Celebrate Mother’s Day by learning about southeast Arkansas birds

By Margi Jenks

Last year some of our visitors had a great time building birdhouses and talking about birds on the Saturday before Mother’s Day.  So, we are again hosting the same program, called “Make a Birdhouse for Mother’s Day”.  This year’s date is Saturday, May 11th.  The program runs from 1:00 to 4:00 PM and will be held at the park’s Diamond Discovery Center classroom.

Our state park standard birdhouse is fun to build and will be a great addition to any yard.  During this program children and their accompanying parents or adults will build the birdhouse from a kit provided by the park.  Then, a presentation will show the common birds that are found in southwest Arkansas and the state park.  Each bird’s picture will be accompanied by their bird call and last year we had a great time imitating those calls.  Finally, weather permitting, we will take a walk to look and listen for the bluebirds, tufted titmice, and other feathered friends that make their homes in the woods around the Diamond Discover Center.

This program is for “children” of all ages, so you can bring a Mom, or you can accompany a child.  The workshop fee is $15.00 for each kit.    If you own an electric screwdriver or drill you might want to bring it, because that tool will make it easier to put the birdhouse kits together. We want to be sure that we have enough kits for everyone who attends, so please reserve your space.  Call Waymon or Margi at 870-285-3113 or send an email to margaret.jenks@arkansas.gov.  We are looking forward to providing you with a different and fun way to celebrate Mother’s Day with your special parent.
